An interview with Saroj Barua - Country Manager Casestudy Bangladesh

Bangladesh is experiencing rapid growth and development and is quickly establishing itself as a major player on the global production map. With massive efforts in place to improve workers' conditions and production practices, the country is shedding its associations with the past amid a huge shift in mindset. And no one exemplifies this more than Saroj.

Bangladesh-born and raised Saroj has worked in the industry for 14 years. An excellent natural communicator and all-around good guy, Saroj is Country Manager at Casestudy Bangladesh.

Hi Saroj, you have been with Casestudy Bangladesh since its beginning; what was it like setting up a new office?

We had our challenges. The Pandemic hit just as we were beginning to hire. I also lost my wife and twin babies to Covid, so it was a hard time for me personally. Being in daily contact with my new colleagues in Europe, the US, and Hong Kong really helped. Everyone was very supportive and welcoming. It was a time that affected everyone, so there was a real sense of connectedness, and it didn't take long for me to feel part of Casestudy. The office is set up now, and things are moving smoothly. We have seven people working at the office in Finance, Merchandising, and Logistics. We are directly connected to our partner factories, orders are in, and we are very busy taking care of them.

You have over 14 years of experience in the industry. How have things changed in that time?

Since the Rana Plaza disaster in 2013, there have been big changes. Compliance is taken very seriously now, as well as conditions and pay for workers.

For example, workers are paid more. Conditions at the factories have improved greatly. They provide workers meals, medical centres, and child minding facilities. They are paid for overtime and are given more training. With better pay and conditions along with training, production has improved. People who don't have to worry about feeding themselves or their baby when they work can focus on the job. Happy workers and a happy workplace mean better production.

Production methods have improved too. Old manual machinery has been replaced with automated production, which is faster and more reliable. Workers learn new skills and are trained in using and managing new technology.

All the major brands have returned to Bangladesh. They have liaison offices here, so communication is more direct, things are faster, and by being on the ground, they keep the pressure on the factories to stay compliant.

Sustainability is becoming more of a condition for business these days. Where is Bangladesh in terms of greener practices?

Bangladesh has come a long way and now has some of the world's best green factories. There are at least 25 real green factories in the country, with more to come. There is much more emphasis on sustainability and being eco-friendly now as brands demand it more, and Bangladesh is turning this into an opportunity.

What green practices does Casestudy offer clients in the region?

Our factories comply with the most recent environmental, safety, and social standards. They specialise in materials like recycled polyester yarns, recycled paper, recycled plastic polybags, sustainable soy-based inks, and organic cotton.

We can now source raw materials in Bangladesh instead of importing them from China. This cuts down on transport costs and emissions. Sourcing locally makes production faster, smoother, more cost-effective, and more sustainable in terms of transport and shipping.

As Country Manager, what do you bring to the role?

I have over 14 years of experience working with some of the big companies in Bangladesh, which has made the transition for Casestudy here very smooth. We already have three very reliable production locations. I have good relationships with people in our industry and deeply understand the culture here.

What do you like about working in the textile/trims industry?

Working with people from all over the world, the diversity. Being in contact with our European and US offices daily really creates a sense of being close as a business while we look after customers from all over the world. Communication is a big part of my job. I enjoy ensuring everything is going in the right direction and working with our factories to get the best results for our clients.

Is there any wisdom or philosophy you use to guide you through your day?

I believe in fairness and transparency. As a Buddhist, I expect change and believe in being adaptable and flexible. Respect and compassion for colleagues, workers, and customers, are very important to me.

Thanks Saroj!
